The Southampton Seniors Council has been established by the city’s Later Years Partnership to ensure that the voices of senior citizens are heard by politicians, policy-makers and professionals in the city, and that their interests are represented.
Senior citizens want the same things in life as everyone else and make a large contribution to the life of the city; but they also suffer, in a variety of ways, from exclusion and at certain times have particular needs requiring specific support.
The Seniors Council represents senior citizens interests, and is accountable to them. It will go about its business by listening and talking with senior citizens, both on a city-wide, and a local basis, to ensure that it is well briefed on issues, and understands the variety of views. It will seek to represent and advocate those views.
By drawing its main representation from the neighbourhoods partnership areas, the Seniors Council will balance the need to tackle city-wide issues with a focus on the local community that is so important to most senior citizens.
The council will meet regularly at the Third Age Centre, in public, and will publish the minutes of its meetings and regularly report its work.
It is supported by the Later Years Team and Age Concern Southampton.
