Southampton Seniors Council - Mission Statement

The Seniors Council is committed to improving life for senior citizens in Southampton by making sure that our voices are heard and our needs and opinions are taken into account by those who make decisions and run services in the city.

At present, the Council is made up of representatives of seniors groups. We are committed to increasing our influence and voice in the city, both collectively and as individuals, and will continuously look for better ways to do that.

Senior citizens reflect the population as a whole, and share its diversity. We are able to contribute to society the wisdom, experience, and historythat accumulates through life. We want to live in a city that involves us, offers us opportunities, and one where we can continue to contribute.

We are not needy, helpless or disabled simply because we are growing older. We are independent. Sometimes we need support to stay independent. We need to know where to turn for help. We need access to information. We want to be able to continue to use the same services as everyone else, without barriers. We want to choose which services to use and when.

The Seniors Council is not tied to a political party or any other organisation. It brings together a wide range of groups and interests and seeks to support and reflect that diversity.
