The Mayor's Challenge to those over 60

The Later Years Partnership, Southampton Seniors Council and Southampton City Council take great pride in supporting the Mayor’s Challenge for those over 60, launched in October 2006.

This award is offered to anyone aged 60 or over with the option of repeating the award in successive years with different activities (and, of course, a different Mayor). This award will be offered in a mayoral year.

The Award is comprised of three sections:

A degree of public service, 30 minutes per week, maintained over a minimum period of six months (many people already offer a great deal to their communities, but ideally,  this will be something new – rather than reward people for what they are already doing!)

A NEW hobby undertaken for a minimum period of six months (again, at least 30 minutes per week).  This could be virtually anything from bird-watching to bungee jumping, playing the trombone to playing bridge, a long desired hobby or something completely new.  This should be possible without incurring great expense.

A residential weekend (ideally as part of a group) with some record kept of the weekend’s activities (diary, photo-log, video etc) to share with a wider audience. To be paid for by participants. This might be a visit to friends or relatives or an organised trip with a local organisation.
