" Enforced early retirement from 40 years in nursing gave me the opportunity to be involved in my local community and the environment in the neighbourhood I have lived in most of my life. The challenge of retirement was changing paid work into full-time volunteering. It is a new way of life but I get satisfaction and rewards from the people I have become involved with.
My first love is my local environment. We want to make major improvements, but money doesn't grow on trees! Chasing funding is a time consuming occupation, but if you don't ask you don't get. Sholing Village Green is a major achievement for our group - a hectare of land in the midst of the community is now preserved for 59 years. It's now a focal point and has encouraged community spirit and active participation from the residents.
We may think our efforts will make no difference, but if we all put our efforts together great things are possible.
